Traditional kerala side dish usually prepared for onam

Chena curry(yam curry) is a traditional side dish of Kerala cuisine. We used to prepare chena ozhichukoottan for onam. Chena is known as elephant foot yam which full of antioxidants and have lot many health benefits. Yam reduces LDL cholesterol in our body and there by reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases. We can prepare lots of dishes with chena. I would like to share my kootu curry recipe with Chena and kadala kootu curry. I prepared Chena ozhichu kootan curry with ground coconut mix. We can prepare chena curry with roasted coconut too. You can also check other onam recipes in this below link.

Onam Sadya Recipes


1/2 kg of Yam(Chena)
1 no of Onion
2 no of Tomato
3 no of Garlic cloves
1 cup of grated coconut
4 no of shallots
1/4 spn. of Turmeric powder
1 spn. of Chilli powder
1 spn. of Oil
1/2 spn. of Mustard seeds
4 no of Red chilli
2 springs of curry leaves
Salt as required


Step 01

Wash and cut the yam in to small pieces.

Step 02

Pressure cook yam with turmeric powder,chilli powder,onion,tomato,garlic and salt.

Step 03

Grind coconut with small onion well.

Step 04

When yam gets cooked,add coconut mix and remove from flame when it starts boiling .

Step 05

Heat oil in a pan.Splutter mustard seeds,red chilli and curry leaves

Step 06

Add this seasoning to curry.Mix well serve.
